Allihies Coastal Education Hub Is the Place to Get Involved in Local Projects
The Allihies Coastal Education Hub engages in sustainable projects that will enhance the area for local residents as well as attract sustainable tourism.
At the moment, staff members and a group of volunteers are developing a conservation plan to improve access that will minimise visual impact, making the Duneen (Dooneen) site suitable for all visitors while protecting and enhancing biodiversity.
This area of unspoiled ruggedness deserves to be preserved while allowing walkers to enjoy the dramatic views and natural beauty of Allihies and the Beara Peninsula.
The viewing point intends to focus its direction on the spectacular Skellig Islands, not to mention The Bull, The Cow and The Calf Rocks.
Allihies Coastal Education Hub, Where Ideas Come to Life
It takes time for projects to develop, however, with the engagement and commitment of the local community such endeavours like the Duneen Heritage Mining Trail will come to life. The area’s historical mining culture dates back to the early part of the nineteenth century. The remnants of mineshafts remain visible today, and are an integral part of Allihies cultural identity which is woven into the very fabric of this community.
Located on the Wild Atlantic Way, Duneen already appeals to the inquisitive traveller. However, making the “stop” worthwhile will entice additional visitors to consider the area’s unique biodiversity and breathtaking vistas. Care and caution are required in order to appreciate the site with the respect it deserves. It is important that visitors, whether local residents or tourists, come away from the site with the feeling of a significantly enhanced experience of their visit to Duneen, while also enjoying the entire experience of the environment – landscape, seascape, and flora/fauna. The visitor, stepping onto the viewing platform will soak up the sense of place and belonging that appears to magically spill over and touch the heart of every visitor.
